Hair Transplant for Her: No Shave Needed

The No-Shave Hair Transplant for Women: an Interview with Dr. Karoutis

For years, the idea of hair transplantation for women was often met with hesitation, primarily due to the daunting requirement of shaving the head. Today, that barrier is broken. Join Peter Zombori in a groundbreaking discussion with Dr. Alkiviadis Karoutis, co-owner of the Swiss Luxury Clinic, as he unveils a revolutionary approach to hair transplantation tailored specifically for women – no shaving required. This interview reveals the innovative techniques, surprising benefits, and what truly sets this discreet procedure apart.

Peter Zombori: Hi everyone, welcome to our medical talk tonight. We're discussing hair transplantation, and specifically, hair transplantation for women, which has historically been a bit stigmatized because of the need to shave the hair. But there are new solutions, and we have Dr. Karoutis here from the wonderful Swiss Luxury Clinic, who specializes in discrete aesthetic surgery and hair transplantation. Welcome, Dr. Karoutis, and thank you for joining us.

Dr. Alkiviadis Karoutis: Thank you so much for having me.

Peter Zombori: As I said, hair transplantation for men is quite common; everybody kind of knows about it. A male over 50 is probably thinking about it. But for women, it's been a bit difficult. I've heard there's a solution, and I wanted to ask you what this solution for hair transplantation for women looks like.

Dr. Alkiviadis Karoutis: All right. Unfortunately, indeed, too many men dominate this surgical field. I think the main reason why women have been so reluctant to have it is not just because they had to shave, which is a major problem, but because they are much more discerning with aesthetic surgery outcomes. All the available options were very male-focused, and, of course, males may not care as much about every detail of a permanent aesthetic surgery result, but with women, this approach doesn't work.

Dr. Alkiviadis Karoutis: So, in the last two years, we've launched this new service: female hair transplant without shaving. In the past, the approach to female aesthetic hair surgery was the exact same as for men, and this simply doesn't work for ladies. You can never ask a woman to fully shave her head. It's a major complication or problem for them, and even shaving a small area is often unacceptable. We all know how long it takes for hair to grow back fully. So, we've been working on this for the last two years.

Peter Zombori: How does it work?

Dr. Alkiviadis Karoutis: We initially offered it as part of our exclusive service, primarily for individuals in the Gulf region, and now we've launched it for the wider public. It's hair transplant surgery for ladies without shaving anything.

The way it works is essentially in the type of cut you make. We have a specific training required for this. The main difference is that instead of using a motorized scalpel, which cannot operate effectively under very long hair, we use a manual technique. Of course, you need specific training for this; it's a little more difficult, but this way, you do not need to shave any of your hair. And, of course, the best aspect of this surgery is that, unlike other types of aesthetic surgery, this only requires a day of aesthetic recovery. This means ladies can be presentable the very next day for gala meetings or any event, because culturally, it's also much more appropriate if they can wear a hairpiece or cover some areas without anything being shown.

I think this, for me, is the greatest benefit, because any aesthetic surgery usually requires you to stay home for some time and not be presentable. If you can fix your hair and within one day be able to go out and just have to contour a little, it's something that I know most of our patients are looking for, and specifically, ladies who previously didn't have a problem they knew could be solved will benefit from this type of surgery.

Peter Zombori: And what are the reasons for female hair loss? Is it also hormone-related?

Dr. Alkiviadis Karoutis: Indeed, hormonal relations are the primary factor. Genetics also play a role, which we can account for but cannot change for now—maybe in a few years. But basically, androgenetic alopecia for ladies is heavily affected by hormones. We provide therapies for these types of pathologies, and this is how we can achieve a very nice result. Of course, we have to conduct a very careful analysis because, for example, we would not perform this on pregnant ladies or those undergoing pregnancy.

Peter Zombori: So, basically, the new solution that has been developed uses a different technique rather than motorized cuts—a specially trained tissue cut that offers the possibility of doing this without any major aesthetic disturbances.

Dr. Alkiviadis Karoutis: It's essentially an instrument that, instead of having motorized assistance to cut, is entirely freehand. So, it depends on the surgical training of the doctor, learning how to do this. The operating instrument itself is quite old-school, which makes it a lot more artistic as well. It has this sort of taste for perfection.

Peter Zombori: Dr. Karoutis, this is super interesting. I didn't really know about this. Thank you for sharing, and I hope to speak to you soon about further topics on hair transplantation.

Dr. Alkiviadis Karoutis: Thank you so much.

Peter Zombori: Thank you so much.

Dr. Alkiviadis Karoutis: Thank you. Have a great day.

Peter Zombori: You too. Bye-bye.
