Things to do in Summer in Saas Fee
1. Traverse the Gorge-Alpine Via Ferrata
The most exciting thing to do in Saas-Fee is to embrace the adventure of the Gorge-Alpine Via Ferrata. Via ferrata is Italian for iron path. Via ferratas are protected climbing routes found in the Alps and other places. A steel cable follows the route, fixed to the rock in intervals, so that climbers can constantly be safely secured. Climbing aids include iron pegs, iron rungs, wood planks, ladders, and suspended bridges. Via ferratas range in difficulty from easy to very difficult and can be done on one’s own or with a guide.
2. Hike the Gemsweg
While Saas-Fee has numerous ski trails in winter, it also has numerous hiking trails in summer. One of the best hikes in Saas-Fee is the Gemsweg, also called the Chamois Trail after the goat-antelopes that can be spotted in the area.
3. Take a Trip to Mittelallalin
Mittelallalin is 3,500 meters above Saas-Fee and is accessible by the Metro Alpin, the highest underground train in the world. At the top is a winter playground, even in the middle of summer. Marmots are in the large ground squirrel group (in the US marmots are commonly called woodchucks or groundhogs). Alpine marmots live in rocky, mountain areas and can be found throughout the Valais region.
5. Ride a Toboggan
Fun summer toboggan ride is a great way to take in the views of the mountains while getting a thrill. The Felskinn toboggan run is a 4.5 km long track with a vertical drop of 1,000 meters. It’s a great way to experience the beauty of the alps while having a blast.
6. Visit the Saas Fee Glacier
The Saas Fee Glacier is the largest glacier in the Valais region and is a great place to explore. The glacier is accessible by cable car and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. There are also numerous hiking trails that lead to the glacier and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
7. Take a Trip to the Saas-Fee Waterfalls
The Saas-Fee Waterfalls are a series of three waterfalls located in the Saas Valley. The waterfalls can be reached by taking a cable car to the top of the mountain and then hiking down to the falls. The hike is relatively easy and the views are spectacular.
